Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn - Naples

The Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (SZN), is a major European research centre for marine biology, operated under the auspices of the Italian ministry of research and education.

The main building with the administration, services and most of the research groups, is located on the seafront in the centre of Naples. A second site on the Island of Ischia is situated at ca. 25 km from Naples with direct access to the sea. The island is well connected with the mainland by means of frequent and fast ferry services. 

SZN is one of the few marine laboratories in Europe located in a major city. It was founded at this location because of the ease of access to a variety of highly diverse Mediterranean flora and fauna  which include extensive seagrass beds, highly diverse marine communities of exposed rocky shores, and plankton communities.

Significantly, the combination of a high biodiversity, direct access through seafront locations, modern scientific infrastructure and skilled, dedicated platforms permit visitors and resident researchers excellent research opportunities. The laboratories and platforms are fully equipped with modern instrumentation and up-to-date scientific expertise, providing a stimulating scientific environment for staff scientists and visitors who wish to integrate modern and classical approaches to study  marine organisms.

Installations to which access is offered

• Laboratories: at both SZN -Naples and SZN -Ischia marine stations, access to all basic research equipment, and technical support. Users may nominate host labs. 
• Platforms: seven platforms are available, Molecular Biology, Microscopy (inc Electron microscopy), Phytoplankton identification, Maintenance of Marine Organisms, Collection of Marine organisms, Techniques for gene expression, and Flow cytometry, including equipment and support from technical staff. 
• Research vessels: R/V Vettoria and R/V  Frederico Raffaelle including all research equipment and technical support from crews.
